Your Ghana card will expire in 10 years – NIA

Abdul Ganiyu, NIDA’s Corporate Affairs Head, stated all Ghana cards have a 10-year lifetime.

“The card has a 10-year expiration date”, he informed Kofi Oppong Asamoah on Class91.3FM’s morning broadcast on March 23, 2022.

The Ghana Card is expected to expire in 2032 if issued in 2022. This makes sense because technology will continue to evolve and improve. We believe we have one of the best identity systems in the world today, but in ten years, new trends will have emerged and you’ll want to tweak and tinker with the system you have so that it will keep up with the times.

“And, furthermore, after 10 years, a lot may have changed about you that you definitely want an update”, he continued.

The Ghana card has become the national identification card. Currently, it is the sole document accepted for SIM card registration.

Register by 31 March 2022 instead of 31 July 2022.

As of 17 March, the ministry announced, 14,091,542 SIM cards had been connected to the Ghana card, 10,348,532 bio-captures had been performed, and 99,445 additional SIMs had been registered.

Because over 7.5 million citizens and residents have yet to get Ghana cards to allow them to register their SIM cards, the ministry said that the deadline for completing the remaining active SIM card registration cannot be reached.

More time will be needed to update the SIM registration app for diplomats, while a self-service SIM registration app is being created for Ghanaians living abroad.

They expect it to be operating by mid-April.

The Ministry of Communication and Digitalisation has consequently extended the deadline for SIM card registration to 31 July 2022.
